IS IT RIGHT FOR ME?
By Dr. John E. Russell
Mailorder can be a rewarding and enjoyable experience. But
there are pitfalls. Here are three.
Illegal schemes may make money or they may not. Whether or
not money is made, is it worth the risk of being embarrassed by a
letter from the Federal Trade Commission or the US Postal
Service? Or a prison sentence? I usually return 2 cent postage
scams to our postmaster after writing on the envelope, "opened by
John E. Russell" and the date. Even if there is no return
address on the envelope, the source can be traced by the sales
letter enclosed. This does two things: (1) Novices who believe
the lie that it is a legal scheme are educated by postal
inspectors, and (2) the real crooks can be prosecuted. Harsh? "A
snitch"? No! We who are in mailorder have a moral obligation to
police it.
Likewise, there are "legal" programs that are unethical.
Legislatures attempt to make just laws, but it is impossible to
make enough laws to cover every situation. For instance, if a
program has a "product" or "service" that isn't worth selling or
is sold for more that it is worth through "hype ads," is it worth
promoting? Maybe we became involved innocently, but now have
learned better. If we continue promoting a poor product or
service, then we hurt others and our business loses credibility.
Another pitfall is the pornography business. I know. . .
people rationalize making money from human weakness: "People are
going to buy the material anyway, so why shouldn't I make the
buck?" "Pornography isn't harmful!" Tell this to pornography
addicts who find that as the disease becomes worse, it takes more
sick sex and violence to achieve the same results. Tell this to
women and children who are the primary victims. Tell this to
AIDS victims whose passions were inflamed by pornography. Since
the billion-dollar pornography business is controlled by
organized crime, those who buy it help support organized crime!
It is an economic parasite in an already-weakened economy.
I wouldn't want to have these three problem areas on my
conscience, would you? Psychiatrist Rodriguez told a group of us
students over twenty-five years ago that guilt is the worst pain
a human being experiences. (A group of us were taking a short
course at Osawatomie State Mental Hospital in Osawatomie,
Kansas). Guilt works on both the conscious and unconscious
levels of the mind and in addition to producing emotional pain,
actual physical and mental illness can result.

SELF-ESTEEM USING PROVEN BIBLICAL PRINCIPLES. See the "How to
Order" chapter in this booklet.
